When the Chesapeake turns cold, a boat on land is a boat you don't have to worry about. Ice, winter storms and freezing water are hard on a hull left in a slip. That's why many Shady Side boaters choose to haul out and store their boats "on the hard" at Parish Creek Landing.
What Does "Blocked" Mean?
When a boat is blocked, it sits on the ground on a combination of timber blocks under the keel and adjustable jack stands along the hull. The keel carries most of the weight; the stands keep the boat level and stable.
Done right, blocking:
- Supports the hull evenly so it doesn't flex or stress
- Keeps the boat upright and secure in winter winds
- Leaves room underneath for bottom work, zinc changes and inspections
- Lets rain and snowmelt drain properly off the deck and cockpit
Our Winter Storage Process
- Haul: your boat comes out in our travel lift.
- Wash: the hull is pressure-washed before it dries, included with every haul.
- Block: the crew sets your boat on blocks and stands in the yard.
- Protect: add engine winterization and shrink wrapping to finish the job.
Get Ahead on Spring
A boat on the hard all winter is a boat that's ready for bottom work. Cleaning, sanding and bottom painting can be scheduled over the off-season, so your boat is ready to splash when the weather turns. DIY owners and outside contractors are welcome to work on their boats on-site, too.
Other Ways to Store With Us
Not every boat needs to winter in the yard. Parish Creek Landing also offers one of the few fully enclosed boatels on Maryland's western shore, plus outdoor racks and trailer storage. See our Complete Guide to Boat Storage in Shady Side.
